Mane set to miss Community Shield

Sadio Mane will miss Liverpool’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

Mane finally started his summer break last weekend following Senegal’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final which culminated in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Algeria.

The winger is now set to report back for duty with the Reds on Monday, August 5, meaning he will be absent from their Wembley showdown against City.

Liverpool are due to take on Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions a day prior to Mane’s scheduled return in the new English season’s traditional curtain-raiser.

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the 27-year-old will be in contention for their Premier League opener with Norwich City on Friday, August 9.

“He is in good shape,” said Klopp.

“Obviously they had a celebration in Senegal and I’m happy about that because it showed that they respect the competition and saw the second place as a success, which is nice.

“He is now on holiday, not the longest one – he will be back on August 5, after the Manchester City game. That means he had two weeks.

“There is four or five days to prepare for Norwich, 10 days for Chelsea [in the UEFA Super Cup].”
