Dominik Szoboszlai has dismissed claims Liverpool need to be more ‘streetwise’.

Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal ended a run of five consecutive wins for Andoni Iraola’s side as the visitors sealed their first Premier League victory at Anfield since 2012.

But the Reds were denied a potential opportunity to level the clash when Alexander Isak was pulled back by Jurrien Timber in the penalty area shortly after conceding.

Both referee Andy Madley and VAR Stuart Attwell refused to award a spot kick which has led to suggestions that the hosts will be required to make more of fouls.

Iraola admitted post-match that he would consider instructing his players to go to ground moving forward in order to gain an advantage from contentious decision.

Szoboszlai, however, sees no reason why Liverpool should have to compromise.

He said: “It’s not our type of play.

“I don’t think in this moment you can think this way that ‘Oh, let me wait for someone touching me and then I can fall down’.

“No, he is focusing on the ball and he wants to head the ball in the net.

“But if you interfere with your hand on his back then he might not do it, then you take a chance from his point of view and it’s a penalty.

“Everyone sees it differently but I don’t think you can see this one different.”

The Hungary midfielder marked a long-awaited return against the Gunners after missing Liverpool’s previous three games with a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

He had initiailly missed a home defeat to Manchester City and the Champions League win over LASK with the problem after returning from the international break.

“It’s very hard, you know,” admitted Szoboszlai.

“I’m the type of player, as you might know, that the last three seasons I want to play every 90 minutes.

“But sometimes your body says ‘rest a little bit’ and my body told me to ‘Stay calm, you’ve had enough games now’.

“I missed games against City and LASK and then I felt again very good after a couple of days off but it seemed I wasn’t ready.

“Sometimes it is my heart and I listen to my heart and not my body. These decisions I made with what happened in the last weeks so today was the plan to come in.

“I was actually ready from the start but I’ve played 30 minutes and let’s see from now on.”
