Liverpool to play in Community Shield

Liverpool will face Manchester City in next season’s Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola’s side sealed a domestic treble with a 6-0 rout over Watford in Saturday’s FA Cup final, just six days after pipping the Reds to the title.

But the Premier League champions are set to take on their closest challengers in the new campaign’s traditional curtain-raiser at Wembley on Sunday, August 4.

It will be Liverpool’s first appearance in the Community Shield since 2006, when they ran out 2-0 winners over Chelsea at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could also start the new season as UEFA Super Cup finalists should they overcome Tottenham in next month’s Champions League final.

Traditionally the trophy is contested between the winners of the league and FA Cup but City’s success means the Anfield club will feature as league runner-up.

In total, Liverpool have been involved in the Shield on 21 occasions, winning the competition 10 times and sharing it in an additional five years.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and a brace apiece by Raheem Sterling and David Silva ensured that City became the first English side to win all three domestic trophies.
