Napoli chief wants Liverpool draw ‘explanation’

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis says he will ‘ask for an explanation’ behind Liverpool’s seeding for the Champions League’s group stages.

Last season’s finalists were paired with the Serie A outfit, Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade in Group C of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Reds have featured only twice in the Champions League since 2009/10 and progressed beyond the group stage just once since the season before.

Despite reaching May’s showpiece, where they lost to Real Madrid, the Anfield club’s coefficient ranking remains relatively low in relation to draw seeding.

But De Laurenttiis has claimed that he is set to lobby UEFA as to why Liverpool were ranked in the third tier of clubs for last Thursday’s draw.

“We are bitter [about the draw], I will ask for an explanation from UEFA,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Liverpool, Champions League finalists, are put in pot 3? It is a disastrous anomaly.”
