Liverpool FC player-only meeting inspired Spurs win

Liverpool’s players held a meeting without Jurgen Klopp ahead of last Saturday’s win over Tottenham, Adam Lallana has revealed.

A Sadio Mane-inspired performance saw the Reds end their wait for a first league win in 2017 by downing Mauricio Pochettino’s side at Anfield.

It came after a month-long spell in which Liverpool forfeited their places in the EFL Cup, FA Cup and Premier League title race with one win from 10 games.

Klopp had staged clear-the-air talks with his squad in the aftermath of a 4-3 defeat to Swansea City last month which continued their bad run of form.

But a discussion led by captain Jordan Henderson last week at Melwood was held out of the Liverpool manager’s earshot in a bid to arrest the recent slump.

“Big credit to Jordan, he wanted the team meeting to happen and got everyone together,” said Lallana.

“It wasn’t just him who spoke. The senior players spoke, the non-senior players, everyone. It was good, it was refreshing. It was just in the dressing room at Melwood.

“Every now and again it doesn’t hurt to speak about it.

“Sometimes if anyone has anything to say, as long as it is not personal, just purely professional, there is no harm in reminding each other of what we need to do and what we want from each other.

“You could see everyone was fighting for each other.

“It was a very open meeting and I came out of it knowing that every one of those players are together and intent on turning things around as quickly as possible.

“Almost an ‘us against the world’ type of attitude and we will do anything for each other, work our socks off, for it to change as quickly as possible.

“We knew things would change, it was just a matter of time, but it was up to us to show when it would change.”
