Liverpool install Diogo Jota tribute at Anfield

Liverpool have installed a permanent tribute to Diogo Jota outside Anfield.

Friday marks the one-year anniversary of Jota’s untimely passing as well as that of his brother Andre Silva from a road accident in northern Spain.

Plans for a sculpture to commemorate the fallen pair were unveiled in May under the title of ‘Forever 20’ that will sit within the stadium’s footprint.

The tribute to the pair incorporates a flowing heart design in memory of the Portugal international’s trademark celebration incorporated in the centrepiece.

Created by sculptor Emma Rodgers, the design reveals the shirt numbers 20 and 30 which both players wore in what proved to be their final matches.

Lyrics of Jota’s famous chant which Reds supporters continue to use to pay homage in the 20th minute of games since his tragic passing.

The memorial has been placed on 97 Avenue, where thousands of physical tributes were placed to create a poignant tribute in the immediate aftermath.

Some of those tributes, including scarves and shirts, have been set in wax and delicately embedded into the structure and surface of the sculpture.

Further items are also incorporated into the Granby Rock‑faced stone plinth, with using Portuguese stone from the brothers’ hometown of Gondomar.

A single flower placed in tribute by a fan at the time of the brothers’ passing has also been cast in bronze, making it a lasting physical presence.

A PlayStation controller also sits on the plinth as a metaphor for Jota’s love of gaming, and his signature celebration pose.
