Man City make contact for Liverpool winger

Manchester City have emerged as the latest suitors for Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo’s Anfield future remains unclear despite starting for Andoni Iraola’s side in their Premier League opener against Newcastle United over the weekend.

The Netherlands international scored early in the second half at St James’ Park to level as the Reds went on to claim a 2-2 draw with a stoppage-time penalty.

Tottenham continue to monitor Gakpo’s situation but are yet to formalise their interest in reuniting him with recently departed teammate Andy Robertson.

However he could still be set for a move away from Merseyside with City making contact with the player’s entourage over a potential move in the summer window.

The Etihad Stadium outfit, now led by Enzo Maresca, are yet to reach out to Liverpool in their plans to make the 27-year-old their latest summer recruit.

A potential departure for Gakpo, who is under contract until 2030, would force the Anfield hierarchy to accelerate their plans for new attacking reinforcement options.

Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye remain on their radar while successive bids for Yankuba Minteh were rejected by Brighton last week.

Although the European champions are yet to lower their valuation of Barcola, which stands in the region of £130 million, Liverpool remain confident of striking a deal.

The France winger has been omitted from PSG’s opening two games while his future continues to be unresolved and is only training with Luis Enrique’s side.
