Radio City sign to be removed from St Johns

Radio City 96.7’s branding is set to be removed from St Johns Beacon.

The signage has been visible across Liverpool city centre since the turn of the millennium following the station’s move to the iconic landmark in 2000.

However the studios at the top of the tower were last used in December 2024 when Radio City moved out as part of its networked rebranding to Hits Radio.

Prior to the move, owners Bauer Media set out its intention to replace the signage to reflect the change in name subject to planning approval.

But Liverpool City Council have now submitted an application to remove the Radio City branding in favour of replacing it with a new animated LED screen.

City planners stated in their submission that the screen would ‘improve the visual quality of the signage as visible both during the day and in darkness..

A heritage statement also outlines that the original Radio City display has outlasted its use, especially with the station’s semi-recent departure.

It said: “St Johns Beacon is continuing to be used to advertise a business that is no longer resident, and which retains no relationship with the building.

“This also confuses its own identity, giving the incorrect impression that it continues to be occupied by and part of the radio station.”

The new proposed screen is described as ‘sensitively signed, of a high quality and enhances and improves the building’s existing townscape role and prominence as a landmark and an illuminated feature in the skyline’.

A date on the plans to be brought before the council’s planning committee for a final decision is yet to be confirmed.
