Liverpool have confirmed the departure of Adam Bogdan on a season-long loan to Wigan Athletic.
Bogdan endured a difficult first 12 months at Anfield after failing to displace Simon Mignolet as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper last season.
Opportunities were further limited for the Hungarian stopper by this summer’s arrival of Loris Karius from Mainz to challenge Mignolet for the top spot.
The 28-year-old joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign in the wake of reserve goalkeeper Brad Jones’ departure.
In spite of saving three penalties in a League Cup shoot-out win over Carlisle United on his first senior appearance, a series of errors characterised his remaining outings.
Jurgen Klopp recalled Danny Ward from his loan spell at Aberdeen to provide competition for Mignolet, which further restricted Bogdan’s first-team chances.
Ward has since gone on loan to Huddersfield Town, after signing a new contract extension, while academy goalkeeper Ryan Fulton has joined Chesterfield for a spell.
The departure on loan of the three keepers beneath Mignolet ensures that the Belgium international will have a fighting chance against Karius to stake his claim in goal.
