Mohamed Salah has revealed Steven Gerrard’s role in his Liverpool exit.
Salah will bring the curtain down on nine years with the Anfield club at the end of this season, just 12 months before his current contract is due to expire.
But the Egypt international’s time with the Reds risked being curbed half a season early following his explosive interview after a 3-3 draw at Leeds.
He claimed that Arne Slot’s side had thrown him ‘under the bus’ in the decision to leave him on the substitutes’ bench for a third successive game.
The 33-year-old even suggested his final game before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations would be his last for the Premier League champions.
However Salah has lifted the lid to TNT Sports on how a visit from former Liverpool captain Gerrard in January helped him part amicably with the club.
“People didn’t know you came to my house, we had a good conversation,” he told Gerrard.
“You said your opinion and I really appreciate it. I am glad I am leaving now through the big door.
“That is something you mentioned to me, just leave on your terms, I still remember those words. I am happy about it.
“Everything that is going on this season makes me think, ‘no, it’s time to go’.
“Honestly, physically I feel I have a lot to give. I played many games this season and I played the African Cup of Nations.
“I didn’t decide yet what I am going to do yet, I have a lot of options, good options.
“Physically I feel fine, I feel what I did over the years paid off, I feel good. I will see what is best for me.”
