Liverpool have been handed a fitness boost by news on Joel Matip’s ankle injury.
Matip bowed out of Sunday’s friendly win over Wigan Athletic with the problem, prompting concerns the central defender could be set for an unwelcome early lay-off period.
With Jurgen Klopp already denied the services of Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, both due to Achilles injuries, it was feared that the Reds’ summer recruit would be set to follow.
However scans have revealed that Matip only suffered bruising at the DW Stadium last weekend which will see him return to action far sooner than first anticipated.
It remains unclear whether the former Schalke defender will feature in Wednesday’s trip to Huddersfield Town but is set to be available for Liverpool’s tour of the United States.
Klopp revealed last weekend that he was hopeful on Matip’s injury was not too severe.
He said: “I hope it’s only a minor problem. He said he’s had it one or two times already.
“Joel gets better and better and better, you can see it. It’s not too serious, hopefully.
“It’s the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity. He’s used to it.”
