Brendan Rodgers backs Liverpool FC for Premier League title challenge

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed successor Jurgen Klopp to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Rodgers was replaced by Klopp following his sacking last October, which saw the Reds reach two finals and narrowly miss out on Champions League qualification.

But the Northern Irishman, now in charge at Celtic, believes that absence of European football will stand his former club in good stead to vie for English football’s top honour.

“I think Liverpool have a great chance this year,” Rodgers told TalkSport.

“Liverpool and Chelsea don’t have European football and that’s a huge advantage for you, where you can prepare your team all week for just the one game every week.

“Of course, you’ll have domestic cup games in between that, but I think Liverpool will have a good chance this year.

“But it will be very competitive with the coaches that have come into the Premier League, that makes it exciting and I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic season.”
