Liverpool award historic title winners’ medals

Liverpool have presented historic title winners’ medals to 14 former players.

The specially sourced medals were awarded in recognition of the individuals who were part of eight Anfield championship-winning teams between 1964 and 1990.

Each player missed out on their respective medals at the time due to a Football League qualification criteria ruling they had to play 14 top-flight fixtures that season.

But the Reds confirmed on Thursday that a host of ex-players received their domestic honours ahead of last month’s Carabao Cup tie with Southampton.

They are as follows:

  • Alan Kennedy – eight appearances, 1985/86
  • David Fairclough – eight appearances, 1982/83
  • David Hodgson – five appearances, 1983/84
  • Jan Molby – seven appearances, 1987/88
  • Paul Walsh – eight appearances, 1987/88
  • Ronny Rosenthal – eight appearances, 1989/90
  • Terry McDermott – eine appearances, 1975/76
  • John Wark – nine appearances in both 1983/84 and 1985/86

Chris Lawler’s son collected the medal on his behalf for the six appearances made in Liverpool’s maiden First Division success under Bill Shankly in 1963/64.

Medals were also handed out to four player who could not attend on the night:

  • Alec Lindsay – six appearances, 1975/76
  • Colin Irwin – eight appearances, 1979/80
  • Sammy Lee – seven appearances, 1979/80
  • Steve Heighway – nine appearances, 1979/80

A medal was presented posthumously to the family of former defender Joey Jones following his untimely passing in July for his 13 appearances in 1975/76.

Sir Kenny Dalglish presented the medals during the ceremony alongside Liverpool’s chief legal and external affairs officer Jonathan Bamber.

“We’re thrilled to have been able to celebrate this occasion at Anfield,” said Bamber.

“It was an emotional night for many and it’s a real honour to have been able to source and present league championship winner’s medals to our Forever Reds.

“Their role in winning one or in one case two of our 20 league titles deserve a medal not only to mark their achievement but also for playing such a significant part in our club’s decorated history for which we are immensely grateful.”
