Fenway Sports Group insist they have learned from their mistakes as Liverpool’s owners.
Wednesday marks 15 years since the Americans were handed control of the Anfield club after a lengthy legal battle with former custodians Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
In the ensuing decade and a half, the John Henry-led investment group ushered in a new era of prosperity for the Reds with tangible growth both on and off the pitch.
The club has won two Premier League titles – the first ending a 30-year wait – and a Champions League as part of nine major honours delivered under their watch.
FSG also committed to the expansion of Anfield with the successful renovations of the Main Stand and Anfield Road End that took its current capacity of over 61,000.
The Premier League champions moved into their purpose-built AXA Training Centre in 2020 while the women’s team have relocated to the legendary Melwood complex.
But the Boston-based group have also encountered scrutiny for various missteps.
Henry publicly apologised in 2021 for his role spearheading Liverpool’s involvement in the controversial yet short-lived European Super League breakaway plot.
FSG also came under fire from supporters for furloughing staff during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as attempting to hike match ticket prices up to £77 in 2016.
In an open letter, Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon acknowledged they had ‘got things wrong’ in the past while also pledging their continued aim towards progress.
They said: “Liverpool Football Club means so much to so many people, and that’s something we’ve always been conscious of.
“This club is part of the fabric of the city and far beyond it. It connects generations and communities in a way that is truly special. Being part of that story is a privilege, and it brings a responsibility we never take for granted.
“Today is a day to look back with gratitude. But it’s also a reminder that our work isn’t done.
“There’s still so much more ahead of us – more to achieve, more to win, and more memories to make, together.
“And to you, our supporters – on behalf of everyone at Fenway Sports Group – thank you.
“Thank you for welcoming us, for believing in this team through every high and low, for telling us when we’ve fallen short, and for showing the world what it truly means to be part of Liverpool Football Club.”
