Liverpool have turned down the chance to sign Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.
Gordon’s future is the subject of growing uncertainty as Eddie Howe’s side attempt to raise funds before Sunday’s Profit and Sustainability deadline.
The Magpies are understood to have held talks with their Anfield counterparts over the Kirkdale-born playmaker, whose career began in the club’s ranks.
But a request for promising Reds’ centre-back Jarell Quansah to move to St James’ Park as part of the deal proved to be a sticking point in negotiations.
There is, however, a possibility that the deal could be revisited before close of play on Sunday should Newcastle’s inability to offload other players continue.
Gordon is currently preparing for England’s Euro 2024 last-16 encounter with Slovakia on Sunday after an impressive first full season on Tyneside.
After leaving Liverpool aged 11, he joined neighbours Everton and went on to produce seven goals in 78 appearances before leaving in January 2023.
He also made a first Premier League start against Jurgen Klopp’s side in a behind-closed-doors Merseyside derby in June 2020 at Goodison Park.
