Fire breaks out at Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral had to be closed after a fire broke out.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to the landmark on St James’ Mount at 2.44pm on Friday (May 1) when smoke could be seen rising from the tower.

Crews arrived on the scene within five minutes with two fire engines and an aerial appliance to tackle the small blaze which was triggered by an electrical fault.

The building was evacuated with the popular visitor attraction temporarily shut while firefighters investigated the cause of the fire in the balcony area of the top floor.

“MFRS crews investigated and confirmed this was an electrical fire on the balcony on the top floor of the cathedral,” read a Fire Service statement.

“Firefighters fought the fire, and the building was evacuated.”

It took under 40 minutes for the main body of the fire to be extinguished while the affected area was damped down before crews left the scene shortly after 5pm.
