Virgil van Dijk has been charged by the Football Association after Liverpool’s win over Newcastle.
Van Dijk was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak during the first half of last weekend’s encounter at St James’ Park but initially refused to leave the pitch.
The Netherlands international proceeded to remonstrate with referee John Brooks following the incident, which earned him an automatic one-game ban.
But Van Dijk could face further sanctions after he was hit with an improper conduct charge by English football’s governing body on Tuesday evening.
“Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August,” confirmed an FA statement.
“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.”
Van Dijk has until Friday to respond to the charge.
