Liverpool FC are set to receive a substantial fine from UEFA as punishment for the seven charges they incurred during this season’s Europa League campaign.
The Reds lost Wednesday’s showpiece final 3-1 in Basel and could be in line for further misery today with UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary body due to meet in Switzerland this afternoon to discuss a suitable verdict.
No less than five of the charges relate to Liverpool’s last 16 tie against north-west rivals Manchester United in March, when the Anfield club were cited for illicit chanting, the use of fireworks, throwing objects, crowd disturbances and a late kick-off.
The final two incidents involve the setting off of flares during Liverpool’s quarter-final victory over Bundesliga giants Borrusia Dormund.
UEFA officials had asked the Reds to answer the charges and provide evidence as to how they’d avoid similar incidents occurring in the future, but with no suitable explanation forthcoming, a hefty fine is in the offing for the red half of the city.
