Gary McAllister wants Liverpool to emulate the club’s heroes of 2001 in next week’s Europa League final.
McAllister’s extra-time free kick saw the Reds edge out Alaves in the final of the competition, under its previous guise as the UEFA Cup, 15 years ago to complete an historic cup treble.
The former Scotland international is well-placed to assess the fortunes of Anfield’s current crop, as both a club ambassador and a member of Brendan Rodgers’ back room staff earlier this season.
And with the winner of Basel showdown against reigning holders Sevilla set to secure a Champions League qualification place for next season, McAllister hopes Jurgen Klopp’s side will seek inspiration from their predecessors.
“I just hope they can repeat what we did back in 2001 against Alaves,” he told Click Liverpool.
“I just hope its another night to remember.
“The final is something you associate with Liverpool. European finals are something that they’ve got a great history of doing well in.
“With the incentive of Champions League football next year is given more gravitas, and given the opposition we’ve beat in the Europa League it remains a premium European competition.”
