Liverpool weigh up emergency signing

Liverpool are weighing up drafting in Andy Lonergan as an emergency signing.

Lonergan was part of the Reds’ squad which took part in a pre-season tour of the United States this summer following a goalkeeper shortage at the time.

First-choice stopper Alisson Becker had yet to return from the Copa America while youngsters Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros were both injured.

But Lonergan, 35, could now be set to become a permanent fixture in the senior ranks at Anfield amid growing fears of a prolonged lay-off for Alisson.

The Brazil international suffered a calf injury when taking a goal kick in Friday’s 4-1 win over Norwich City that is expected to sideline him for up to eight weeks.

With both Kelleher and Jaros still working their way back to fitness, the Reds currently have only one available stopper in the form of summer signing Adrian.

Lonergan is currently a free agent after leaving Middlesbrough at the end of last season and would provide short-term cover for Adrian during Alisson’s absence.

The former Real Betis and West Ham goalkeeper will make his full debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side in Wednesday’s Super Cup clash with Chelsea.
