Liverpool confirm defender as first summer signing

Liverpool have confirmed Sepp van den Berg as their first summer signing.

Van den Berg will join the European champions on July 1 from PEC Zwolle in a deal worth an initial £1.3 million that could potentially rise to £4.4m overall.

He attracted interest from Bayern Munich, Ajax and Sampdoria but opted for a move to Anfield, where he will initially feature in academy level games.

The 17-year-old already has semi-regular experience of first-team football after making 15 senior appearances for Zwolle in the Eredivisie.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” he told the club’s official website.

“It is, for me, the biggest club in the world and it’s a dream come true. I am really excited.

“I’ve seen what kind of players from the Academy grew into the first team here. It is unbelievable, especially when this kind of big club does that.

“Of course, the trainer [Jurgen Klopp] is a great guy and one of the reasons they are successful – and also one of the reasons I came here.

“I think this is the best place for me to grow and hopefully play a lot of games here.”

Van den Berg’s arrival is expected to herald a low-key summer window for the Reds, with further incremental additions likely to be their main transfer business.
