Liverpool are set to be without Joe Gomez for up to six weeks through injury.
Gomez was stretchered off with a leg fracture during Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Burnley following a double challenge from Ashley Westwood and Ben Mee.
News of the defender’s setback comes as a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side after he formed a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk for large parts of this season.
“Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night,” confirmed a club statement.
“The defender needed to be substituted after 23 minutes at Turf Moor following a challenge from which he was unable to continue.
“Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.
“Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.”
Gomez is set to miss this month’s decisive Champions League clash with Napoli in addition to encounters with Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City.
