Liverpool scrap pre-season friendly in Brewster row

Liverpool have cancelled a friendly with Borussia Monchengladbach in a dispute over Rhian Brewster.

A scheduled pre-season encounter between the sides was due to take place at Anfield on Tuesday, August 7 but has now been cancelled by the hosts.

The Reds withdrew the offer to Monchengladbach due to their belief that the Bundesliga club have made an illegal approach to their teenage striker.

Brewster is yet to agree terms on a professional contract with Liverpool since turning 18 last month but is understood to be assessing options elsewhere.

He has not featured for the club since a season-ending knee injury in March.

Several German clubs have been credited with interest in the Under-17 World Cup winner including Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

But Monchengladbach’s status as forerunners for Brewster’s services appears to have irked Liverpool, who are considering lodging a complaint to FIFA.
