Gomez ruled out of Champions League final

Joe Gomez has been ruled out of Liverpool’s Champions League final appearance.

Gomez underwent an ankle operation earlier this week after playing through the pain barrier in the Reds’ successive draws with West Brom and Stoke City.

The defender originally sustained the problem during England’s friendly win over Holland in March but returned to first-team action barely a month later.

He will now miss the final two games of this season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, including their May 26 showdown with Real Madrid in Kiev.

Hopes of Gomez making England’s World Cup squad this summer have also faded with no time frame on his recovery determined as yet.

Gareth Southgate had been expected to include the 20-year-old for his side’s warm-up game against Nigeria in four weeks’ time, on June 2.

Gomez confirmed his lengthy lay-off period in a social media post on Tuesday.

“Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season.

“The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season”
