Matip ruled out for rest of Liverpool’s season

Joel Matip will miss the rest of Liverpool’s season with a thigh injury.

Matip suffered a suspected dead leg in last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace but the problem was later revealed to be more server than initially thought.

News of the Cameroon international’s campaign has been cut short emerged on the eve of the Reds’ Champions League quarter final with Manchester City.

He now faces the prospect of surgery in a bid to be avaiable for the start of pre-season training and Klopp admits that the injury came as a surprise.

He said: “Joel is out for the rest of the season – there’s no doubt about that.

“In the game, when it happened, he felt something but didn’t think it was so serious, that he could carry on.

“It looks like it needs at least further assessment and maybe surgery, we will see.

“He should be back for the start of pre-season. That’s the good news.”

Klopp revealed that Liverpool are still hopeful of Adam Lallana returning to action before the end of this season from his hamstring flare-up against Palace.

Lallana was withdrawn barely five minutes after coming on as a substitute at Selhurst Park which compounded the midfielder’s already injury-hit campaign.

“We have to see. It’s a hamstring injury, could have been worse but bad enough,” added Klopp.

“It means he is not available for the next weeks but don’t want to finish the season for him. With a few weeks to go, there’s a chance he could be back.”
