Klopp: Salah battling De Bruyne for Player of the Year

Jurgen Klopp says Mohamed Salah is a contender to be Player of the Year.

Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne is currently the bookmakers favourite for the award after a sensational season for the Premier League leaders.

But Liverpool forward Salah is not far behind him in many people’s estimations, though, having enjoyed an outstanding first season at Anfield to date.

The Egyptian currently leads the league’s scoring charts alongside Tottenham striker Harry Kane and has bagged 32 goals in all competitions.

And his manager, speaking after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Newcastle, believes that has put him firmly in the reckoning for the player of the year gong.

“I think there’s no doubt that Kevin de Bruyne has played a nice season but there’s no doubt that Mohamed Salah has played a good one as well,” said Klopp.

“But it’s not only him there are a few more players, a few people would mention Harry Kane and a few people would mention Roberto Firmino hasn’t been too bad.

“David Silva had a few weeks where he couldn’t play for private reasons couldn’t play but is having an outstanding season.

“There are a few good players in the Premier League this season. In our team I like a lot what we did so far but I don’t have to make the decision.

“At the end there will be one winner, there are a few good players around.

“The life of a professional sportsman is that you do it because you want to win, I don’t think a lot of people are doing it for participation.

“We want to win things, that is a big part of our personality. For me trophies mean nothing and I have no idea why that is but it’s the truth.

“But winning the title is different and I really respect that. If he, Salah can win it he deserves it.

“There are few games to go and we have to make sure that he can keep going.”
