Klopp fumes at Liverpool’s Istanbul comparisons

Jurgen Klopp has reacted angrily to questions about Liverpool emulating their 2005 Champions League-winning side this season.

Wednesday’s last 16 encounter with Porto offers the Reds a chance to take a step closer to a place in the final of Europe’s elite club competition.

Under Rafael Benitez, the Anfield club overcame AC Milan in a penalty shoot-out to lift the trophy having trailed 3-0 at half time in the showpiece clash.

But Klopp is disinterested in comparisons between the current Liverpool side and their predecessors that achieved the improbable in Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium.

He said: “I don’t think the 2005 side thought about this before the last 16 round.

“If they did, it would really surprise me. I could ask Rafa.

“It makes no sense. I have no idea. But if we are in the final we will try to win it for sure.

“But it’s such a long way, I hate to talk about the round after the actual round. Only because I am a friendly person I answered a question.

“Usually in private if I get asked a question about the next round, I leave the room immediately.

“Only because we are live on television I haven’t done it.”
