Matip laments ‘killing’ Liverpool’s FA Cup hopes

Joel Matip has lamented his mistake that ‘killed’ Liverpool in their FA Cup clash with West Brom.

A 3-2 defeat saw the Reds exit the world’s most famous cup competition at the fourth round on Saturday for a third successive season.

Calamitous defending left Jurgen Klopp’s side trailing by two goals at half time in the Anfield tie despite VAR being required to settle some contentious decisions.

Matip was one of the culprits when he inadvertently turned Craig Dawson’s goal-bound effort into his own net just before the interval.

And the defender has admitted that his mistake effectively ended any hopes of Liverpool clawing their way back against the Baggies.

“We started in front, our offensive play was okay, but in the defence we had problems,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Mistakes like my one kill every team. This mistake cannot happen, I have to clear this ball.

“In the first half, [conceding] three goals, it hurts every team. It was really hard to come back then.

“We tried [to get back] the whole time but it’s really hard against a deep-standing team. [West Brom] did what they had to do today and it was enough.

“We have to do everything to turn things [around], to get in better shape and get better results.”
