Liverpool take Mane precaution on Senegal duty

Liverpool have sent a physio with Sadio Mane on his latest Senegal call-up.

Mane recently returned to action from a four-week spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury picked up while representing his country last month.

The winger made a successful comeback in last weekend’s win over West Ham before answering with two assists for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But the Reds are keen to prevent any potential setbacks and have sent club physio Scott McAuley with Mane to oversee his fitness on Senegal duty.

Klopp’s decision to guard against the 25-year-old spending any additional time on the sidelines has also been backed by the country’s football association.

The Liverpool manager admitted last week that Senegal’s decision to call Mane up for their World Cup play-off with South Africa could benefit the player’s recovery momentum.

“If he goes there – he has to go there – then he has a few days of training,” Klopp said at the time.

“If they get the point they need [to qualify], maybe we can get in touch with them again and ask if it’s necessary for him to play the second game and then he could come back.

“That would be the ideal situation, but we can’t decide that – FIFA doesn’t give the clubs the opportunity to decide when they play for their countries.

“There are clear rules and we respect them. In this specific case, if he goes it would be good for his rhythm.”
