Rodgers feared ‘heart attack’ after Liverpool exit

Brendan Rodgers feared suffering a heart attack in the wake of his Liverpool sacking.

Anfield chiefs called time on Rodgers’ spell in the managerial hot seat in October 2015, just hours after the Reds had been held to a 1-1 draw by Everton.

The Northern Irishman went on to take the reins at Celtic the following summer and he has enjoyed great success with the reigning Scottish champions.

But Rodgers admits that the stress of leaving Liverpool sparked a minor health scare in the weeks which followed his departure from Merseyside.

“I had an incident when I left Liverpool,” he told BBC Sport.

“Within a couple of weeks I went to Dubai and I lay in fear one night that I was having a heart attack.

“I suppose my mum’s situation maybe came over me because she died suddenly of a heart attack.

“I was rushed into the hospital. I was looked after great and it was basically a reaction to the body, the tightening of everywhere in and around my chest.

“It was starting to condition itself in terms of not having that pressure, so that was something that really made me sit up.”
