Klopp delighted with ‘wonderful’ Liverpool rout

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his delight at Liverpool’s counter-pressing in the 7-0 win over Maribor.

The Reds rediscovered their goal scoring boots in Slovenia, putting seven past their opponents to record their best ever away win in Europe.

Key to their victory was the manner in which they pressed the ball, with the front three of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah pressing the Maribor defence throughout.

Indeed, the pressing all over the pitch was evident from the get go, and harked back to the early Geggenpressing days of Klopp’s reign.

And Klopp says it was that aspect of the win that delighted him most, despite the comfortable scoreline.

“Our attitude was really outstanding and what we expected of ourselves,” he told BT Sport.

“From the first second the counter-pressing was the best I’ve seen for a long time. It was important we got the ball back and something that we had wanted.

“We scored wonderful goals, played wonderful football and in the end it looked like Maribor was not good but I think it was really difficult to play against us today.

“You saw it each second when we let them play in front of our box. I loved the fact we stayed concentrated in the second half and could have scored more.

“We controlled the game, it was a very mature performance.

“It’s obviously a really close, tight group so you need goals, results and we set a pace with the first two performances and today we were confident.

“You can struggle in a game like this if you are not 100% with your attitude and we were very mature.

“To be honest the seven goals were wonderful but I was close to celebrating the counter-pressing more than the goals because it was so good.

“Maribor are a really good football team and they couldn’t cope with us. That’s the best thing we did tonight.”
