An Everton fan has been arrested after a Manchester City player was racially abused.

The 71-year-old man was detained during Monday’s Premier League meeting at Hill Dickinson Stadium following reports by both supporters and stewards.

City have since confirmed Antoine Semenyo was the subject of the abuse, which is the second time he has been targeted on Merseyside this season.

Merseyside Police arrested the man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after supporters and stewards reported the incident.

He has since been bailed with conditions, including restrictions preventing him from going within one mile of any designated sports stadium on match days.

“Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable,” read an Everton statement.

“They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society, and behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated.

“A swift response from fellow supporters, stewards and Merseyside Police led to the individual being identified and appropriate action taken.

“The club will continue to work closely with the authorities to support their investigation and will take the strongest possible action in line with its zero-tolerance approach.”

Semenyo was previously the subject of alleged racist abuse as an opposing player for Bournemouth in their fixture with Liverpool on August 15 last year.

Mark Mogan, 47, has denied making discriminatory remarks to the forward at Anfield Stadium ahead of a fitness to plea hearing on September 7.
