Woman to face false MP abuse claims trial

A Liverpool woman will stand trial over false abuse claims against ex-politicians.

Esther Baker has been charged with four counts of perverting the course of justice after making allegations that she was sexually abused by the two former MPs.

The targets were named as John Hemming, who was the Liberal Democrat MP for Birmingham Yardley, and ex-Labour home secretary Roy Jenkins, who died in 2003.

Baker also stands accused of implicating erstwhile Leicestershire Police chief constable Simon Cole, who died in 2022, as having aided or abetted the abuse.

The fourth charge against the 43-year-old relates to a wrongful claim of abuse by men in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire as well as other unspecified locations.

Baker, from West Derby, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday (February 11) to confirm her name and date of birth as a trial date was set.

She was released on conditional bail until a new hearing scheduled on June 19.

Judge Andrew Menary KC, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool. confirmed that her trial will begin on March 22, 2027 and is expected to last from six to eight weeks.
