Liverpool to bid for World Gymnastic Championships

Liverpool is bidding to again host the World Gymnastic Championships.

The city previously held the event in 2022 and has been put forward by British Gymnastics to stage the competition again as part of its 2030 bid proposal.

If successful, it will be one of the biggest global sporting events hosted in the UK that year and comes two years after Euro 2028 comes to the region.

The M&S Bank Arena is set to again act as the host venue with training, warm-up and competition all location within one site at King’s Dock.

A feasibility study projects that the championship’s return in 2030 would see a boost of over £8 million added to the Liverpool City Region’s economy.

International Gymnastics Federation president Morinari Watanabe hailed the success of Liverpool’s 2022 hosting as ‘the start of the new gymnastic scene’.

Sarah Powell, British Gymnastics’ chief executive, said: “The opportunity for any gymnast to compete in front of a passionate home crowd is something really special.

“We’d love for our British team to be able to experience that in 2030 as part of their build up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics – there could not be a better host city for it than Liverpool.

“We have seen with the women’s Rugby World Cup and the football Euros that hosting major events can harness the nation’s passion and be a catalyst for greater impact.

“So, this World Championships bid is a chance to achieve so much more and have a lasting impact far beyond the week of incredible sporting drama that will unfold in the arena itself.

“Gymnastics is a foundation sport that gives hundreds of thousands of children and young people of all backgrounds and abilities that first introduction to being active and learning how their bodies can move.

“It’s potential to shape the future of the nation as an active, happy and healthy one is huge.

“That’s why it’s so important we use Liverpool 2030 to drive that positive impact of our sport even further.”

Liverpool’s formal bid submission will be made in December with the FIG set to announce the winning host country in May 2026.

The city is already staging the latest British Championships in March 2026.
