Brookside set to make surprise TV return

Iconic Liverpool soap opera Brookside is set to return to TV this year.

Created by Sir Phil Redmond in 1982, the long-running show was a staple on Channel 4 for 21 years before it was finally wound up in November 2003.

Filmed on Brookside Close in West Derby, it pioneered several groundbreaking moments in UK television history and made many of its stars into household names.

But ‘Brookie’ will be revived in October as part of a crossover episode to mark the 30th anniversary of Hollyoaks, which was also devised by Huyton-born Redmond.

A number of iconic characters from the show will make cameo appearances in the episode, more than 20 years since it ended, to discover where they are now.

Hollyoaks writer Steve Hughes has reimagined the scenes with the characters, having originally started on Brookside before moving to the Chester-based soap.

Filming will begin on Brookside Close, which is now home to residents, next month with owners of the close and the Liverpool Film Office granting their permission.

Sir Phil Redmond said: “It is always bitter sweet thinking back to Brookie, the reminders of its success and impact, but the thoughts of many, like Dean Sullivan and Bill Dean, who are no longer with us.

“But it is great that Lime Pictures are paying homage in their Hollyoaks anniversary cross over episodes.

“I can’t wait to see how all the gardens are coping in the heatwave and, who knows, what might pop up if someone decides to re-lay their patio. I know we left something else down there.”
