Shots fired at taxi near north Liverpool school

A man has been arrested after shots were fired at a taxi in north Liverpool.

Police were called to York Terrace at around 11.15am to reports a male wearing a balaclava on an electric bike had fired twice at a Hackney cab.

The taxi drove away in the direction of Netherfield Road North while the male on the bike is believed to have ridden off in the direction of Everton Valley.

No reports have been received of anyone being injured in the incident, which saw nearby Our Lady Immaculate Primary School locked down by staff.

Detectives later detained a 32-year-old man from Liverpool on suspicion of possessing a firearm. He remains in police custody for questioning.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and patrols have been increased in the area to provide reassurance to the community and continue inquiries.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: “I recognise that this has caused a lot of concern for the community, particularly because it happened within the vicinity of a primary school.

“This incident clearly highlights how the people who choose to carry and use firearms and those involved in serious organised crime simply don’t care about our communities.

“We are relentless in our pursuit of people involved in serious organised crime, but we rely on your information to help our investigations.

“If you have any information about this incident, please get in touch as a matter of urgency because it could be vital.”
