Jurgen Klopp to receive Freedom of Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is set to be awarded the Freedom of the city.

Klopp has guided the Anfield club to every major honour in club football since his appointment in 2015, including their long-awaited Premier League title.

He also steered them into three Champions League finals in the space of five years, winning the 2019 showpiece in memorable fashion in Madrid.

The German will learn whether he will be bestowed with honourary Freeman status when Liverpool City Council hold an extraordinary session next week.

If approved by the committee, he would join two other Reds icons in Steven Gerrard and Sir Kenny Dalglish to receive the city’s highest civil accolade.

Klopp, 55, recently extended his stay on Merseyside by signing a fresh contract extension that will tie down his future until the summer of 2026.

Also set to be awarded the Freedom of Liverpool is actress Sue Johnston, best known for her roles in Brookside, The Royle Family and Coronation Street.

The Warrington born 78-year-old worked as an assistant to Beatles manager Brian Epstein and made an OBE in 2009 for her services to drama and charity.

Should the recommendations be approved, Klopp and Johnston will receive their Freedom Scrolls at a civic function hosted by Lord Mayor Roy Gladden.
