Jon Flanagan spared jail over girlfriend assault

Liverpool player Jon Flanagan has been handed a community order for assaulting his girlfriend.

Flanagan pleaded guilty to the charge at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court earlier this month in relation to an incident which took place before Christmas last year.

CCTV footage shown in court on Wednesday showed the former England international kicking partner Rachel Wall on a night out in Duke Street.

Sentencing Flanagan for the attack in the early hours of December 22, District Judge Wendy Lloyd said: “You are a relatively young man with no previous convictions and it is therefore sad that you have come before the court today due to your behaviour

“This is an unpleasant episode…as we have discussed at the previous hearing this was not just a single act in that few minutes it was a matter of this lady going to the floor twice and you used your foot on her on one occasion.

“I find this was a category two offence, this lady does have injuries but of course she did not attribute those injuries to you.”

The Anfield defender, 25, has been ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work as well as a 12-month community order with 15 rehabilitation days.

He was also forced to pay £85 in costs and a victim surcharge of the same figure.
