Liverpool icons light up for Come Out of the Shadows

Liverpool’s most iconic buildings are set to be lit up in the rainbow colours of the LGBT+ flag.

Organisers of Liverpool Pride have called on as many of the city’s famous landmarks to brighten up their buildings in the rainbow colours of the LGBT+ community.

Backing has already come from St George’s Hall, Liverpool Central Library, the Royal Court, John Lennon Airport and the World Museum among others.

Liverpool FC are again backing the campaign once again after they successfully lit up The Kop stand at Anfield for last year’s ‘Come Out of the Shadows’ campaign.

Across Merseyside, The Atkinson in Southport, Crosby Library, New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion and the Steve Prescot Bridge in St Helens are also taking part.

Pride are hoping that more of the region’s buildings will take part to make Liverpool the most visible LGBT+ city in the UK for Come Out of the Shadows.
.
The campaign’s goal is to show Liverpool is an LGBT+ friendly city for residents and visitors and plan to raise awareness and normalise all forms of LGBT+ amongst society.

From July 20 to 30, people will see many landmarks lit up in the rainbow flag and also have the opportunity from both LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ to show their support.

Michael Carey, from Liverpool Pride, said: “Come Out of the Shadows is about highlighting the city region as one that is tolerant and visibly LGBT+ friendly.

“We believe that discrimination in any form is unacceptable and created this lighting strategy to celebrate equality and diversity.

“Liverpool Pride invites all building owners, venues and businesses across the City region to contact us, pledge your support and help us to shine even brighter!”

Barclays, the official sponsor for Liverpool Pride 2017, have a 12-month partnership to provide access to employment and financial services in LBGT+ community.

Mark Armario, Director of Barclays’ Premier banking, said: “As we build on our partnership with Liverpool Pride, supporting Come Out Of The Shadows is another way in which we show our commitment to the LGBT+ community.

“At Barclays we want our colleagues, customers and clients to feel free to express who they are at all times.

“We’ve made great strides internally in creating an inclusive global workplace, but we want to go further.

“By supporting Liverpool Pride and the Come Out Of The Shadows project, we’re saying ‘this is who we are’ and we want to encourage everyone else to be able to say who they are, without fear.”

Liverpool Pride returns for its eight year running on July 29 and 30 with this year’s theme “International Love” as part of the cities 50 Summers of Love festival.
