Review: La Tasca’s new look and menu

La Tasca Liverpool is already a firm favourite with many of the locals  however the tapas bar and restaurant has undergone a £440,000 overhaul to bring it to the 21st Century.

What was once “traditional” Spanish decor has been replaced with neon lights and bright colours that celebrate the vibrancy of modern Spain.

The once hidden kitchen is now on full proud display for all diners to watch their dinner being prepared. The new look kitchen even comes with a Paella station where you can watch the traditional Spanish being created by the highly trained staff.

We started our evening with Sangria and “Tabla La Tasca” which is a sharing plate of Sliced chorizo, salchichón, Piquillo peppers, Manchego cheese, olives, Ciabatta and mini chorizo bites which was a nice start to the meal, and offered very good value for all that was offered on the plate.

The staff in the restaurant are pleasant and knowledgeable – an explanation of each of the items we were served was provided included a history of where in Spain they have come from.

We then tried some tapas dishes including Pimientos De Padrón, Pescado Rebozado, Presa Ibérica, Slow Cooked Pork Cheeks and Pan-fried Squid.

My particular favourites were the Presa Ibérica and Slow Cooked Pork Cheeks. These are highly recommended and absolutely delicious.  The steak was surprising as it looked almost like steak but it was in fact Pork from Iberian pigs – very tasty and something a little different.

We also had a Paella which is easily shared between at least 3-4 people who also have tapas. We had Paella de Mariscos which is a bit of everything including Chicken, Prawns, Squid and Mussels. It was particularly nice to have a little of everything. The paella was pipping hot and served in a traditional style Paella Pan.

We were lucky enough to be able to wash this down with a glass of Torres ‘Mas La Plana’ Cabernet Sauvignon which is usually priced at £55 per bottle. This was a delicious wine. I am by no means a wine expert, nor am I likely to be but the quality of the wine was definitely palpable and it was a delicious treat to polish off a lovely evening.

The new decor has really put Liverpool’s La Tasca back on the map after the introduction of 100’s of new modern restaurants. The famous terrace is still in place and will likely be a firm favourite for many years to come.
