Girl, 15, dies after Formby Beach difficulty

A teenage girl who got into difficulty swimming at Formby beach has died.

Chiedza Nyanjowa passed away at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on Saturday (May 30) just five days after being taken from the Merseyside beauty spot.

Emergency services had been called to the beach on Albert Road at around 3.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday following reports of a concern for safety.

The 15-year-old from Cheshire became the 14th water-related death to occur across the UK during the recent hot weather spell.

“Her family would like to express their gratitude to everyone that helped Chiedza,” read a statement issued through Merseyside Police.

“Her family are glad that there were people around her to support her, their support shows that she was loved.

“This is a difficult time for the family, who would appreciate any form of prayer.

“Her family describe her as a bubbly person, she loved Christ and going to church.

“She loved cooking, she was a giver and wanted to be nurse when she grew up so she could give back.

“She will be greatly missed and remembered for her kind spirit.”
