The Surprise Of The Season: Super Salah

When Mohamed Salah signed for Liverpool last summer for around £34 million from Roma, some fans were left with mixed feelings about the Egyptian attacker. The 25 year old had been impressive for Italian outfit Roma the season prior notching 19 goals in 41 games and setting up another 15. The reservations were probably due to his previous stint in the Premier League at Chelsea. Salah only managed 19 for The Blues and, scoring twice, with four assists. These folk need not worry though as Salah has been arguably the best player in the league so far this season.

On the back of Sunday’s game against Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side, Salah now finds himself as the second highest scorer in the league, one behind Harry Kane of Tottenham. Kane’s late equaliser from the spot at Anfield saw him edge one goal ahead in the scoring charts (22) but Salah, who scored twice in the same game, has a better minutes to goal record than the Spurs striker. This says a lot about Salah who often plays wide of an attacking three, while Kane plays as the central striker.

Salah has been the signing of the season, by far. You could even go as far as saying he may be one of the best signings made by a Premier League club for a good while, especially as he only cost £34 million. When you compare this figure with other transfers in world football, especially for a man who has now scored 28 goals and set up 9 in his last 34 games. £34 million is a steal and his goals to game ratio surely puts him in conversations which include elite players.

Many people will instantly look at the Egyptian and feel that he’s all about pace, but he’s so much more than that. While his pace is an asset, his speed of thought is too, as well as his positioning. He knows where to be, when to go and uses his pace to get there. What we also saw against Spurs especially was his great ability to turn players inside out. His second goal was mesmerising, as he weaved through the Spurs backline before finishing brilliantly. It was a goal which showed just how good Salah is, how confident he is and that he can do it against the better sides in the league too.

Salah has now become the quickest Liverpool striker to net 20 times in the Premier League and while his goals have been crucial, the biggest plus is possibly his link up play with the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. This is what has made Liverpool so effective going forward and they have proved that when the front three are on their game, they’re a match for any side in world football.

You can’t get away from the fact that Salah is the pick of the front three, especially with the form he is in and has been in since the start of the season. If he can continue scoring the goals he will be instrumental in Liverpool finishing in the top four once again and that would have to be seen as a good season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
