Liverpool scrap Schalke game over fixture clash

Liverpool have scrapped a friendly with Schalke due to a clash with their Premier League campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were due to take on the Bundesliga outfit on Tuesday, August 6 in their final game ahead of the new 2019/20 season beginning.

But the Premier League’s decision to pit the Reds against newly-promoted Norwich City on Friday, August 9 has put paid to those original plans.

Schalke’s visit to Anfield would have taken place just three days before the European champions began their new league season against the Canaries.

Liverpool announced the high-profile game with the German side last week prior to the Premier League confirming the new set of fixtures on Thursday morning.

Sky Sports will broadcast the opening league fixture but insist they received no requests from Anfield chiefs to avoid being scheduled for the Friday night slot.

It means that Klopp will have five days to prepare for the new season following the Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley on August 4.

Liverpool have pledged to work with their Schalke counterparts to reschedule the pre-season fixture ahead of the start of 2020/21.
