Andy Robertson has revealed that he nearly joined Stoke instead of Liverpool.
Robertson left Hull City for an £8 million move to Anfield in summer 2017 and has become a revelation since forcing his way into Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
The Scotland international rose to prominence during the Reds’ run to last season’s Champions League final and later handed the armband for his country.
But Robertson admits that he held initial discussions about a prospective switch to the Bet365 Stadium before the interest from Liverpool materialised.
“Stoke were quite interested in me,” he told Open Goal.
“Mark Hughes had liked me and I think there was a wee bit of chat with them, so I was thinking they were a really good option.
“I think they finished top 10 that season and I was trying to get my head on a move to Stoke.
“I was thinking they were really keen, and at that point, under Mark Hughes, they were playing good football.
“They had Erik Pieters; I wasn’t sure if I was going in as back-up to him as he was flying that season.”
