Jurgen Klopp reveals new Liverpool captains

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool have expanded their captains’ group.

Four senior players previously occupied the roles, with Jordan Henderson and James Milner established as first-choice and vice-captain respectively.

Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum were elevated to the two deputy positions but varying upheaval in the past 12 months has forced a slight rethink.

Holland international Van Dijk suffered a season-ending injury last October while compatriot Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-German during the summer.

Klopp took the decision to fill the void left by the midfielder’s departure by electing three additional figures in a vote decided by the Reds’ squad.

“We had the three [who] stayed and then the players voted for another three,” confirmed the Liverpool manager.

“The three are then obviously Hendo, Millie and Virg. Then the next most votes got: Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Robbo (Andy Robertson) and Alisson Becker.

“Because obviously we had a problem last year that from time to time that many players couldn’t play, we had no-one of the players’ committee available anymore.

“I thought it makes sense to increase this group a little bit, so that’s what we did.”
