Henderson’s Liverpool future in uncertainty

Jordan Henderson’s Liverpool future has been plunged into uncertainty.

Henderson entered the final two years of his existing deal at Anfield earlier this summer but is yet to agree a fresh extension with the club’s hierarchy.

Talks between the Reds and the England international’s representatives have been ongoing since early June but have now seemingly reached an impasse.

Jurgen Klopp is understood to be keen to tie Henderson down to a long-term contract as both captain and a driving force in his squad since late 2015.

The stand-off mirrors the situation which saw his former midfield partner Gini Wijnaldum leave the club and join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

PSG have also emerged as potential suitors should Henderson decide to end his decade-long association with Liverpool earlier than its current 2023 expiry.

Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be a keen admirer of the 31-year-old’s abilities and the compatibility he enjoyed during Wijnaldum’s time at Anfield.

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are also monitoring Henderson’s situation amid doubts over Saul Niguez remaining in the Spanish capital next season.

Henderson became immortalised as the Liverpool captain who helped end their 30-year wait to clinch the Premier League title just 12 months ago.

He was also voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association after creating #PlayersTogether, a fund set up to help the NHS tackle Covid-19.
