Jurgen Klopp labelled Curtis Jones a ‘top player’ after Liverpool’s win over Sheffield United.
Jones broke the deadlock at Bramall Lane on Sunday with his fourth goal of this season, continuing an excellent run of form in the visitors’ midfield.
And despite his tender footballing age, Klopp believes the homegrown 20-year-old has already shown why he deserves his place in their first team.
He said: “There’s a lot to come from Curtis. The potential is exceptional.
“In the analysis, we showed him this week that he needs to do more in the decisive areas. It worked out well for him tonight.
“He’s a top player; there’s no doubt about that. That’s why he is playing.
“He needs to be involved in more goal scoring opportunities; that is clear. Like all players, he has areas for improvement.”
The victory moves Liverpool to within two points of West Ham ahead of Thursday’s visit by fellow Champions League qualification hopefuls Chelsea.
Klopp is hopeful that Diogo Jota will be among those again available for the Anfield clash after being ruled out of the win over the Blades by illness.
The Liverpool manager also expects Fabinho and Alisson to both be back in contention, with the latter on compassionate leave since his father’s death.
“Diogo was with us in the hotel and got sick overnight, so we had to send him home. It depends how quick he recovers,” added Klopp.
“Ali and Fabinho I’m pretty sure [will be back for Chelsea on Thursday].”
