Klopp: Liverpool ‘will try’ to sign a centre-back

Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool are ‘working on’ in their hunt for a centre-back.

Another injury for Joel Matip in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Tottenham threatens to see the Premier League champions’ defensive stock decimated further.

Matip suffered suspected ankle ligament damage in the capital while Fabinho, who has operated as a makeshift option, missed out with a muscular injury.

The Reds now head into this weekend’s trip to West Ham, with captain Jordan Henderson and one of Nat Phillips or Rhys Williams partnering him in defence.

Ahead of the January transfer window closing on Monday, Klopp admitted that the club are actively assessing targets in the hope of sourcing cover.

When asked if Liverpool will bring any new players in before the deadline, he said: “I don’t know, but we will try.

“It would be funny when you all think ‘Oh, Liverpool is just fine with the situation, they don’t care and they don’t try’.

“We try, but how you know, there’s nothing to say until something happens so we will see.

“The situation yesterday [with Matip] didn’t make it easier or whatever but it’s still just that we try to do the right things.

“If that’s possible we will do it.”

The Liverpool manager remains hopeful that Matip’s prognosis will be less severe than initially anticipated with results of his injury expected on Friday.

“There are still glimpses of hope that it’s not serious,” he added.

“No, we don’t have the final result because the scan didn’t happen yet.

“So we know more in three or four hours hopefully.”
