Henderson nominated in SPOTY shortlist

Jordan Henderson has been shortlisted for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Liverpool captain received the nomination for the 2020 awards after guiding his team to their first Premier League title in over 30 years.

Last season’s long-awaited triumph capped off a stellar 12 months in which he had lifted the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Henderson, 30, was also crowned the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year in recognition of his off-field work in response to the cornavirus.

He became a driving force in Players Together, an initiative set up by fellow professionals to raise funds that went to help the NHS during the pandemic.

Joining Henderson in the six-person shortlist are F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, cricketer Stuart Broad, jockey Hollie Doyle, boxer Tyson Fury and Ronnie O’Sullivan.

The winner will be decided by a public vote with the results announced during the annual live ceremony, which will take place this year on December 20.

Michael Owen is the only Liverpool player to have won the award, in 1998, while Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard finished third in 1986 and 2005 respectively.
