Liverpool make brief return to Melwood

Liverpool are set to make a brief return to their former Melwood home.

Over 70 years of history drew to a close last week with the Anfield club’s departure from its iconic base ahead of moving into the AXA Training Centre.

But the Reds’ under-18 side will be playing at the West Derby complex on Saturday before it is demolished to make way for affordable housing.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side take on Leeds United in their U18 Premier League North fixture which was originally scheduled to take place in Kirkby.

However a hectic day at the Academy, with the U23s and U16s also in action, means that Liverpool’s young guns will make a surprise final outing at Melwood.

The 12pm kick-off will continue to be played behind closed doors but Bridge-Wilkinson believes the rare opportunity is one his players will savour.

“It’s an absolute honour for us to get this wonderful opportunity to play at Melwood,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I can tell you the lads and staff all can’t wait to play there on Saturday.

“Melwood is such an iconic place in Liverpool’s history and it really is special for the Academy to get this opportunity.”

Liverpool head into the clash sitting third in the table, two points behind leaders Manchester City, and on the back of a four-game winning streak.
